These kitchen mallets create a great addition to every cook’s arsenal of kitchen utensils, and are a combined (1) meat tenderizer and (2) chicken (and fish and garlic) press/pounder. Weighing-in at about 775 grams (27 ounces), little force or pressure is needed to handle this mallet.
The faces of the mallet head are made of solid, US-made, FDA food compliant grade 304 18-8 stainless steel. The meat tenderizer mallet face has sharpened pyramidal tenderizer points on it and a protective black cap is included to protect its sharp points (or to protect other items from the sharp points) when not in use. The meat tenderizer can also be used as a peanut butter cookie press!
The other flat and smooth stainless-steel mallet face is quite useful for flattening chicken or fish as part of cooking preparation, or crushing garlic and other spices for that matter.
The beautiful hardwood handle and mallet heads are handmade from spalted maple or spalted birch from our property in Quebec that is carefully turned on our vintage wood lathe.
Spalted wood is beautiful and eye-catching and it comes in many forms with unique lines, patterns, colors and textures that is caused by decay of certain species of aged wood. While somewhat rare and sought after by woodworkers and others for its beauty, spalt is one of the longest-lasting colorations found in wood.
The hardwood is then spray-finished with at least five coats of ultra-clear, environmentally friendly, water-based acrylic lacquer that both highlights the character of the wood and provides a durable, shiny finish. The stainless-steel mallet head faces are then threaded onto the hardwood mallet heads.
Kitchen Mallet / Meat Tenderizer
While all of our kitchen mallets are very similar in shape, because each one has unique wood markings or colorations, each is listed separately in the drop-down menu under “Wood Type (Type de bois)” and only one item is available for each selection, and a view of each side of each mallet can be accessed by "clicking" on the small circle under the image.
The total length of the mallet is about 12 ½ inches (320 mm). The mallet head is about 4 ½ inches long x 2 ¼ inches in diameter (114 mm x 57 mm), including the two, ½ inch (13 mm) thick stainless-steel mallet faces being part of the mallet head length.
To care for the wooden handle and mallet head, simply wipe with a damp, non-abrasive cloth when needed, however, the wood should never be allowed to soak in water or be washed in the dishwasher or it will become damaged. The stainless-steel mallet faces can be unthreaded and removed for easier washing when required and, unlike the handle, this part can be immersed in water or washed in the dishwasher if desired.
