Decorative and functional, our beautiful, handmade Garlic Keepers are made of carefully-selected Canadian maple and black walnut with complementary rich warm hues that enhance kitchen atmospheres while providing ideal conditions to preserve those gorgeous garlic flavours and extend the shelf-life of garlic bulbs. The keepers can also be used to separately store other spices, such as ginger or turmeric (mixing of spices in a single keeper is not recommended).
These are designed to offer natural dry storage conditions at room temperature while restricting light and allowing ample air circulation. Under such conditions and depending on kitchen humidity levels, whole garlic bulbs can keep for several months or more in these containers.
Our garlic keepers are handmade by cutting a series of maple strips called staves, which are then glued together using with waterproof, food-safe glue into a round, open form. In turn, this form is glued to a dark walnut base, after which the assembled piece is turned round on our vintage wood lathe, including finishing the hollowing of the piece to a smooth form. The black walnut lid, also tuned on our lathe, features a stylized shape of a garlic bulb as a knob. Twelve small ventilation holes are arranged in an even, zig-zag pattern on the piece. It is then finished with food-safe mineral oil.
Garlic Keeper (Garlic Container, Garlic Pot, Garlic Cellar)
Weighing-in at about 19 ounces (540 grams), this Garlic Keeper measures approximately 8.3 inches (21 cm) tall (with knob) with an outside diameter of 4.6 inches (12 cm). The height from the base to the top of the lid below the knob is approximately 6 inches (15 cm). The inside dimensions are approximately 4.6 inches (12 cm) deep and 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter
Please note that some slight variations in shape and/or size might occur because each hardwood Garlic keeper is individually turned by hand on our lathe. Also, because wood is a natural material, each item may have a different grain pattern and difference in coloration than what is shown in the picture.
To care, simply wash using with a soft, damp cloth and dry immediately with a kitchen towel. Condition the Garlic keeper with mineral oil from time to time whenever it looks dry by applying some on the wood, letting it dry for an hour or so, and then wiping it off with soft paper towels. Mineral oil can be obtained from your pharmacy.
While enjoying your own personal garlic keeper, consider combining another one with a garlic bunch for a beautiful and unique gift.
